The Lauderdale Rifles
Company F, 46th Mississippi Infantry Regiment

Commander's Journal

The following information is reported to have been recovered from the Commanders Journal of  F Company, 46th Mississippi Infantry Regiment.  These are not the notes of CPT Con Rea, but a subsequent company commander.

Record of Events
September 1862 through February 1864

In Vicksburg, Mississippi, during September and October 1862, until November 4th.

In January/February 1863 was in Vicksburg. The company was engaged in the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou on 28-29 December 1862. Those names which were reported "sick at home' had been sent to hospitals in Mississippi Springs and in Jackson, during the months of July, September, and October 1962. Said Lt. W. F. McKinnon, commanding the company: "We suppose they have furloughs from said hospitals but have received no official notice to that effect. We have reliable information that they are at home sick but by whose authority [we] can not tell as we do not know the soldier marked "supposed to have deserted from hospital &c." We have thus marked [him in our records ]from the fact that he has not reported himself to us since he left the hospital and we do not know where he is."

With the Regiment in Vicksburg during the siege. Paroled at the capitulation [of Vicksburg, July 4] & furloughed July 23rd to Aug 23/63 by order of Lt. Gen. [John C.] Pemberton. During the siege we had one Lt. severely wounded. Was at the battle of Port Gibson, May 1, 1863 when we had one man slightly wounded and taken prisoner. Was also with the Regiment under fire and covered the retreat from Big Black Bridge, May 17, 1863.

The Regiment left Enterprise, Mississippi, under orders, the 22nd of November. Arrived at Resaca, Georgia, where it received orders to go to Mobile, Alabama, and remained until 2nd of Feb./64.
